This week’s newsletter highlights exciting activities across various disciplines. Health and Social Care students practiced clinical skills with advanced simulation tools. Year 12 Liberal Arts explored narrative theory and debated the political role of literature. Ignite students attended a Whiston Hospital careers fair, while Year 12 classroom assistants began gaining hands-on teaching experience. Year 10s tackled the ‘Pasta-cine’ challenge, and Year 13s are working on innovative EPQ projects. MeDeVet students started a vaccine challenge, and our engineers developed new CAD designs. Lastly, girls from Years 9-11 had an inspiring day at LJMU’s Girls in Maritime event.

Whiston Hospital NHS Careers Fair
Ignite students visited Whiston Hospital for a careers fair, where they explored healthcare professions like cardiology, respiratory care, microbiology, and prosthetics. They learned how to carry out ECGs and CPR, as well as discovering apprenticeship career pathways in the medical field.
Daniyal from Ignite said “I really enjoyed learning about the diverse range of careers in the NHS. My favourite part was learning about how the NHS helps patients who speak different languages, even if you’re deaf, people can communicate with British Sign Language"

STEAM Zoetrope
As part of a project in STEAM on animation, Ignite students made strips to use in a Zoetrope. A zoetrope enables successive images to be viewed rapidly, so they look like a moving image (similar to a flick book). The winning cartoon strip was by Ishani for “Blinking Eye”, and the runner up was Charlie for “Breaking Heart”.

Year 13 EPQ’s
We have some fantastic EPQ projects this year with Emilian analysing water quality at a range of sites around Merseyside, Lucy building a model autonomous vehicle and Jess investigating different methods of producing bioplastics. As always there are many students who have opted for practical investigations or building artefacts.

Year 12 MeDeVet and Life Science pathway students began their vaccine challenge
Students have started the AstraZeneca Vaccine Challenge and have been selecting antigens to focus on for their vaccine designed to combat a fictional new strain of ebola virus. They have also been making standard solutions of Copper sulfate in our industry standard innovation labs and will produce a calibration curve as part of the Alfred H Knight Lab Metalytics project.

Year 12 Classroom Assistants
This week, 24 of our Year 12 students took part in their Classroom Assistant induction, led by Mr Storey and Designated Safeguarding Lead Mr Taylor During the session, students were given an insight into teaching as a career, including the responsibilities of a teacher and the safeguarding practices that must be adhered to. Mr Storey highlighted that one of the benefits is that it allows students the opportunity to teach a child something new, while also building their confidence. The programme aims to inspire our Year 12s, igniting the passion that motivates teachers throughout their careers. The classroom assistants will participate in one to three classes per week, with some students supporting Arabic and Spanish lessons, as these are their first languages, as well as STEAM subjects, English, and Maths. This programme has been successfully running for the past three to four years, and we are excited to see what lies ahead for this year’s cohort. Tibyan, Katie, Malaz, Stephen and Nour.

Liberal Arts
This week, the Year 12 students focused on narrative theory and engaged in an insightful session analysing The Little Mermaid, Animal Farm, and Marxist perspectives. They also participated in a thought-provoking debate on the extent to which literature can be political and how reading itself can be an act of rebellion.

Health Care
The BTEC L3 Health and Social Care course develops students into health professionals. All unit’s link theory to practice. Students must understand the anatomy & physiology of the human body, whilst also understanding how to apply practical health science skills to different physiological disorders. We are lucky enough to have Sim Man that can facilitate patient illness for students to respond to. This week students attached an IV line to rehydrate the simulated patient, with students also practicing their injection skills on a venipuncture infusion fake arm. Finally, students used their skills to investigate tongue swelling and laryngospasm on an ‘airway Larry trainer’. These key practical health science skills require extensive knowledge of anatomy & physiology.

Oracy skills
Ignite students have been working hard on their digital portfolios using google sites. They have also been presenting their “stories” to develop their oracy skills. This week students have had the opportunity to apply to develop original projects to enter into a range of exciting STEM competitions including; Big Bang, Teen Tech Awards, Business of Science and Bafta Young Game Designers.

External Spanish visiting students time comes to a close
This week, our GCSE Spanish students bid farewell to our visiting school, Roulemos. Over the past two weeks, students had the opportunity to engage in cultural exchange, build friendships, and practice their Spanish in preparation for their upcoming exams. We extend our best wishes to our new friends from Vigo and wish them every success in the future. It has truly been a memorable and enriching experience!

Sickness procedure
From a safeguarding perspective, students who indicate they are feeling unwell will not be sent out of class as an unwell/injured student unaided may faint on the stairs or corridor. Staff will call first aid and first aid will go to the student. Students are not to contact home themselves when they are unwell, staff will call parents if needed.

Captain Chris Bates led the second induction week of the Combined Cadet Force for Year 9 students at Liverpool Life Sciences and Studio School.

Year 12 Engineering
This week Year 12 T-level Design and Development for Engineering and Manufacturing students developed a design for a traffic bollard that also autonomously counts the number of pedestrians that pass by. They have been able to develop CAD models of their designs, which they have also simulated using FEA (Finite Element Analysis) software to see how their designs cope under high impact stresses.
Also, this week, Year 12s who are currently doing the OCR Technical (A-Level) have started their unit 10 in CAD design, having to use Fusion 360 to create a 3D digital design for a control pendant.

Work Experience at ARM
During the summer holidays, Kanz a current Year 13 Studio student completed work experience at ARM, the leading technology provider of processor IP and one of the Studio Schools partners. Kanz currently studies Computer Science with Programming and expressed that “Overall it was a nice experience and we learnt a lot. STEAM flower session
Ignite STEAM have been botanical printing as part of a focus on flowers. Last lesson we used dissecting microscopes to examine the structures of flowers, this lesson we used Eco-Printing techniques to transfer the pigments from the flowers to cloth.

Girls in Maritime Trip Liverpool John Moores University
Girls from Years 9-11 attended an event at LJMU to encourage women in maritime industries and had an amazing time with activities that challenged them. In the morning, they built and programmed Lego robots to deliver 'cargo' to a ship, with most succeeding. They then explored interactive rooms with projected images, enjoying activities like 'catching autumn leaves' and 'making fish blow bubbles.' After lunch, they used the ship simulator to race lifeboats to a maritime fire, with realistic communication and some even feeling seasick! The day ended with robot programming and a careers session. One student said, "Today has been the absolute best—I learned about career paths I never knew existed." Many thanks to LJMU and Maritime UK for an unforgettable day!
