Welcome back! As we dive into the second half of the term, our students have already been busy with unique opportunities and experiences. From Gary King’s industry feedback on our students’ VFX work to work experiences like Aaron’s hands-on week at Studley Engineering, it’s been an exciting start. We’re thrilled our youngest students on the Ignite programme, such as lsmaeel, are already embracing their learning journey with us, and to see them exploring the wider area including Liverpool Central Library. Here's to a productive and inspiring term ahead! Make sure you check out the back page for even more chances to get involved.

Industry feedback by Gary King
This week Gary King from Next Gen Skills Academy visited The Studio School to provide midpoint industry feedback to our Games, Animation, and VFX skills students who are undertaking a week-long piece of work experience for Unreal Engine Fellowships and Creative Assembly where they have to respond to the brief of creating a hotel that will entice or repel aliens. On Friday, final presentations will be delivered, and one lucky team will pitch their concept to the industry against other colleges from around the country.

Work Experience at Studley Engineering
Just before the October half-term break, one of our current Year 13 students, Aaron spent five days of Work Experience at Studley Engineering. We enquired about Aaron’s activities during his time there, and he explained that he began the week primarily assisting with tools.
|
|
However, by the end of the week he had learnt how to TIG weld, gained experience using power tools, and contributed to building and pressure testing the cooling systems which he had assembled the previous day. When we asked Aaron about the aspects he enjoyed the most, he mentioned that out of everything he mostly enjoyed working in the fabrication shop. He found it fascinating to learn how much effort goes into creating the pipes. In terms of how it has prepared him for the jobs of tomorrow, Aaron stated “This has been a great experience for me as I have now gained knowledge and experience of what it is like to work in industry and work together as a team.”

Social Science essay writing task
This week students were given a task involving chocolates, applying chocolate testing to how they tackle the essay writing part of their course. Students were given two chocolates that they were not able to choose beforehand. They then had to describe the appearance of each chocolate, identifying its positive attributes and discussing any drawbacks. Additionally, they were asked to explain why one chocolate was preferred over the other.

Ignite student’s positive experience at Liverpool Life Sciences and The Studio
We would like to recognise Ismaeel, one of our recent starters in Ignite. Ismaeel joined Liverpool Life Sciences UTC three weeks into the start of the academic year and so far has been thoroughly enjoying his learning experience. He has been particularly enjoying his English and Science lessons and currently wants to go into the career route of either medicine or law.
|
|
Ismaeel expressed “Staff and students at Liverpool Life Sciences UTC and The Studio School have been really welcoming to me, it’s a lot different to my old school, but I’m enjoying my experience here”. Ismaeel recently attended a Journey to Law event which facilitates opportunities for representation and empowering young people. The event provided him with valuable insight into the daily responsibilities of a solicitor and allowed him to ask insightful questions, with Ismaeel stating that he is eager to engage in more events of this nature in the future.

Ignite visit to Liverpool Central Library
During the next few weeks, all members of Ignite will go on a tour of Liverpool Central Library and will join Liverpool City Libraries. They will be able to use their card in any Liverpool library to borrow books, CDs, DVDs, sheet music, etc. They will also be able to use facilities such as computers with free internet and can access the archives. Libraries also have events such as dance, drama, storytelling, graphic design workshops, and dungeons and dragons.
|
|
Today the first two groups went to the library, they saw the Picton Reading Room, the archives, the famous book "Birds of America" and spent time on the rooftop terrace overlooking the city. The rest of Ignite will take their turn over the next few weeks.

Sickness procedure
From a safeguarding perspective, students who indicate they are feeling unwell will not be sent out of class as an unwell/injured student unaided may faint on the stairs or corridor. Staff will call first aid and first aid will go to the student. Students are not to contact home themselves when they are unwell, staff will call parents if needed.

Uniform and equipment reminder
I would like to remind parents of the uniform standards with regard to girl’s trousers. A small number of students are wearing fashion trousers – these are made of Lycra material and flared leggings in style. The expectation is for students to wear school trousers or a pleated skirt. As the weather is getting colder please ensure your child has a warm, waterproof coat. All students are required to have a school bag with them every day. This must be large enough to carry a number of A4 revision guides. We will provide your child with a suitable bag if they are unable to obtain one.
Jill Davies, Principal at Life Sciences and The Studio School.
