Our students have been busy with inspiring activities and opportunities! Highlights include attending the BioIndustry Association conference, where students networked with industry professionals and explored VR tools for medicine manufacturing. Ignite students designed virtual classrooms with Co-Spaces, paving the way for future learning innovations. Ms. Mallo and Ms. Mahjoub showcased our Arabic Programme at a global language conference in Philadelphia, while Year 10 students collaborated with Scouse Flowerhouse on a climate-focused planting workshop. Work experience, including Mollie's creative placement at Agent Marketing, and visits to the National Apprenticeship Road Show and Alfred H Knight headquarters, rounded out a week full of career-building experiences.

BioIndustry Association trip
Liverpool Life Science students who are part of the Bionow Mentoring Scheme were treated to a range of great sessions at the BioIndustry Association (BIA) conference at St George’s Hall this week. The event consisted of students networking with representatives from the bioprocessing industry, exploring the work of early careers researchers, and discussing apprenticeship opportunities with Cell and Gene Therapy Catapult. Students particularly loved trying out the Resilience Immersive VR to develop skills in medicine manufacturing. Thank you to all involved, but particularly Kate Barclay, for taking the time to arrange the sessions and for showing us around. What a great experience for the students and staff who thoroughly enjoyed it!

Scouse Flowerhouse visited The Studio
This week Flowerhouse delivered a planting workshop with a group of our Year 10 students and was in colouration with Liverpool Biennial using the planters repurposed from the sculptures created Alicja Biala: Merseyside Totemy. ‘Merseyside Totemy' is a new public artwork that visualises statistics and figures related to the impact of climate change on the Liverpool City Region, one of the area’s most at risk from rising sea levels caused by climate change.’ Click here if you would like to find out more.

Trip to Alfred H Knight Headquarters
An excellent day at Alfred H Knight in Prescot with Liverpool Life Sciences UTC students. We were treated to a fascinating presentation from Dr Nikolaos Kapakoglou, followed by a tour, taking in the wide range of analytical techniques used in the labs led by Robbie Hand. Students also had the chance to participate in a great practical activity and hear from a range of employees and apprentices at the company. If that's not enough we were provided with a delicious pizza for lunch too! Thank you to everyone involved, especially Adrian Speed for organising. We had a great day and it has opened our student's eyes to the possibility of degree apprenticeships

Prohibiting the use of mobile phones during the school day from the 1st of January 2025
Whilst phones have brought many positives to our lives, it is now timely for me to recognise that children's use of digital technology is having a negative impact on students’ concentration, behaviour, safety, and well-being. We recently received guidance from the Department for Education stating that schools should prohibit the use of mobile phones throughout the school day.
|
|
As a school, we are in agreement with the Department for Education and are planning to implement the change. Mobile phones are a vital part of life and learning, but we are seeing that a greater number of students are becoming addicted to their phones. Their use within the school day has created additional problems for both our children and the school.
- Mobile phones provide an unnecessary distraction, disruption, and diversion within the school day. One national survey stated that one in three secondary school pupils report that mobile phones are used in most lessons without permission.
- Safeguarding is always our main priority. By removing phones, we believe that this will have a positive influence on all students, making the community a safer place. In recent times, for some students, there has been a significant decline in their wellbeing and mental health. Nationally, three in ten students cite making and maintaining friendships and their mental health as a cause of worry, anxiety, or depression. By removing mobile phones, students can spend more time staying active and socialising face to face with their peers, activities which have a positive impact on wellbeing.

Work experience at Agent Marketing
Year 13 student, Mollie, recently completed three days of work experience at Agent Marketing, who are one of our close neighbours. During her time there, Mollie got to work on and also contributed to an ‘All You Read is Love’ campaign, the campaign was launched in 2020 and has donated over £50,000 worth of new books to share the gift of reading with thousands of children across the North West, with Agent Marketing aiming to make 2024 their biggest yet.
|
|
|
Reflecting on her experience, Mollie shared “I learned how to follow a prompt and create something in a different style to what was requested of me, I also learnt camera skills and how to use different settings and angles on a camera to create a different tone/ vibe.” When asked about the most enjoyable part of her placement, Mollie highlighted that she enjoyed the variety of tasks they handle, and the work environment contributes to making it a rewarding and enjoyable place to be. As for how it has prepared her for the jobs of tomorrow, Mollie shared that meeting tight deadlines while collaborating with others to capture the best shots provided her with valuable hands-on experience. It also gave her a clear understanding of what working in the creative industries truly entails.

Language staff attended a conference in Philadelphia
Last week, Ms Mallo and Ms Mahjoub had the opportunity to present at the Annual Convention and World Languages Expo 2024 which took place in Philadelphia from November 22nd to 24th. The ACTFL Convention is globally recognised as the most comprehensive professional development event for language educators in the U.S.
|
|
This event offers learning opportunities for all language education professionals at all levels and from all languages and access to more than 600 educational sessions for all levels of instruction and opportunities to connect and network with more than 7,000 language professionals. Their workshop “Celebrating Arabic in an Innovative Environment”, which showcased the Arabic Programme at Life Sciences UTC & Studio, was a total success. Attendees were inspired by the amazing opportunities and projects our students enjoy as part of the Language Hub Arabic Programme in our schools. Thanks to our sponsors, QFI, Ms Mallo and Ms Mahjoub were able to share their expertise in creating such inspiring diverse environments where our students thrive through fostering a culture of respect and appreciation for our multicultural schools.

Sickness procedure
From a safeguarding perspective, students who indicate they are feeling unwell will not be sent out of class as an unwell/injured student unaided may faint on the stairs or corridor. Staff will call first aid and first aid will go to the student. Students are not to contact home themselves when they are unwell, staff will call parents if needed.

Uniform and equipment reminder
I would like to remind parents of the uniform standards with regard to girl’s trousers. A small number of students are wearing fashion trousers – made of Lycra material and flared leggings in style. The expectation is for students to wear school trousers or a pleated skirt. As the weather is getting colder please ensure your child has a warm, waterproof coat. All students are required to have a school bag with them every day. This must be large enough to carry a number of A4 revision guides. We will provide your child with a suitable bag if they are unable to obtain one.
Jill Davies, Principal at Life Sciences and The Studio School.
