As we return after the winter break, the cold weather hasn’t dampened the energy of our students, who’ve embraced the new mobile phone policy with great focus. This term kicks off with exciting projects in Ignite STEAM, where students are preparing for the VEX Robotics IQ National Competition. Before Christmas, students attended an inspiring session from Sellafield’s Mark Duffy and hearing from a former student now thriving at Sellafield. Their insights showed how alternative pathways can lead to rewarding careers. Here’s to a fantastic term ahead!

Sellafield Visit
Prior to the Christmas holidays, Mark Duffy, Project Manager at Sellafield, delivered a session on their early year's career programme for IT, Business, and T Level Digital Design and Development students. Reflecting on his experience, Pawel, a Year 13 Studio student, shared “I learnt a lot about how lucrative a degree apprenticeship can be, getting a very high salary within a couple of years. It was interesting to see how the application process is less about grades and more about the individual, seeing the potential in them regardless of academic potential. It was also interesting to see the variety of professions Sellafield employs beyond what you would initially expect from a company working in the nuclear sector.” Pawel noted that after the presentation he felt compelled to research the apprenticeships and programmes available at Sellafield and may apply for a vacancy.

Ben, a Year 13 student, shared the positive impact of listening to Joe, an alumni student of ours who currently works at Sellafield, saying “Joe’s story shows that university doesn’t have to be absolute and there are other options available. It also shows that although degree apprenticeships are competitive, they are not impossible.” He explained, “I took away how to have a competitive application and succeed in interviews, I should stay calm and collected and link any questions given to my past experience in said field.” Big thanks to Mark and Joe from Sellafield for delivering such an impactful informative session to our students!

Ignite STEAM VEX Robotics
In Ignite STEAM, students have been working on building a robot for the Vex Robotics IQ (8-14 year age groups) National Competition. The robot will be taking part in an event in our trust partnership school, North Liverpool Academy, on the 7th of February, which will hopefully allow us to build up enough points to compete on a regional level against other schools across the North West region.
|
|
|
Two more teams are also being put together which will then enter the Vex V5 competition (14+) using the Vex EXP kits which have just arrived.

Mobile Phone Policy - Update from Jill Davies, Principal
As you know we introduced our mobile phone policy this week and once again your children have been wonderful. They have responded so positively and respectfully and the building is absolutely buzzing with conversation and laughter. Every break and lunchtime I see students chatting, reading, playing chess and uno with their friends. Whilst there has been a very small number of students tempted to check their phones, they have been so understanding and respectful of the rules – I am very proud of them all. I am sure they will start to feel the benefits of this break from the constant bombardment from social media, allowing them to focus on friendships and education.

Sickness procedure
From a safeguarding perspective, students who indicate they are feeling unwell will not be sent out of class as an unwell/injured student unaided may faint on the stairs or corridor. Staff will call first aid and first aid will go to the student. Students are not to contact home themselves when they are unwell, staff will call parents if needed.

- Closing Webinar (18 Mar, 4:30 pm): A live or on-demand webinar wraps up the program. Students earn a completion certificate and a Talent Pool profile badge.
Students can start their Future Talent Programme journey by signing up for the opening webinar on 4 February, register here. Students who have signed up will then be notified when the course is live.
