This week, students have embraced incredible opportunities to explore technology, engineering, and digital health! From Year 12's visit to the Hartree Centre to learn about AI and supercomputing, to hands-on robotics projects and system networking lessons, the week has been packed with innovation. Our Year 12 Health Care students gained insights into digital health at the APEX Conference, while Mika, a former student, inspired us with his journey and Fusion tutorials. We also addressed important topics like vape awareness and encouraged creative thinking with plans for the future You are a Journalist project. Read on for more highlights!

Creating Liverpool’s Vocational Profile
12 Year 10 SEND students worked with 'Liverpool City Council - SENISS Team' to help them develop a brand new 'Vocational Profile' as a more suitable alternative to a CV for young people with SEND which happened in December 2024. We are the 'ONLY' school in Merseyside to be involved in this exciting project - and the next steps are to get 12 Year 12 SEND students also involved in this project in January 2025. With an end goal to secure more 'SEND Supported Internships' for Years 11 and 13 students in summer 2025, not only just for the CUC but also cross-Trust through our close collaborations with the Trust Lead for SEND.

UCAS deadline 29th of January at 6 pm
Applications for all 2025 entry undergraduate courses, except those with a 15th of October deadline, should arrive at UCAS by 6 pm on the 29th of January 2025. This is UCAS 'equal consideration' deadline, which means course providers must consider all applications received by this time equally.

Technology students visit Hartree Centre
On Tuesday 21st of January, a group of Year 12 students studying T Levels, Computer Science and Scripting and Programming went to visit the Hartree Centre in Daresbury, the home of the UK supercomputer. They were given an overview of the site and how the government is investing heavily into high-end computing. One of their researchers in AI, Arun, then ran through some of the cutting-edge projects he is currently working on ranging from nuclear reactor digital twinning, and new drug creation to search optimisation for VFX assets.
|
|
|
Then Rachel took students through the training on offer at the site which students can also avail of. After a quick break, we then went into the visualisation suites to look at some of the work they have been doing with partners using AI, quantum computing and availing of the supercomputer power. Finally, the students got to talk to some of the companies and data teams on the site to see how they were working with Big Data.

Vape Awareness assemblies
This week, students participated in informative vape awareness assemblies, where they learned about the health risks associated with vaping. The assemblies provided important insights into the dangers of nicotine addiction, lung damage, and the impact vaping can have on overall wellbeing. Students were encouraged to make informed choices, say no to peer pressure, and support each other in staying healthy.

VEX Robotics
As part of her GCSE Engineering, Ruby participated in an enrichment activity building a robot from VEX Robotics. Once created, the robots will then be entered into the VEX Robotics IQ National Competition, which is taking place at our Trust partnership school North Liverpool Academy. Ruby also kindly provided the marketing team with a tutorial video.

Computer Science
Year 11 students have experienced visits to the main server room in the UTC this week as part of their introduction to system networking. This will prove invaluable as a real-life demonstration of the data infrastructures and set-up.

Sickness procedure
From a safeguarding perspective, students who indicate they are feeling unwell will not be sent out of class as an unwell/injured student unaided may faint on the stairs or corridor. Staff will call first aid and first aid will go to the student. Students are not to contact home themselves when they are unwell, staff will call parents if needed.

APEX Digital Health Conference
Year 12 Health Care students travelled to Bolton University to the APEX Digital Health Conference. They enjoyed sessions in dentistry, psychology, virtual reality, and anatomage. They also worked in simulation sessions for cardiac arrest treatment (which included a functional ambulance and defibrillation devices) and assessment and treatment of victims of a simulated road traffic accident. Students learnt a huge amount about the applications of digital technology in health care and were introduced to careers that are developing in the field.
|
|
They were also introduced to the University of Bolton's new Paramedic Sciences degree course, and two of our students did so well in the RTA simulation that they were invited to apply by the course director! Students also had fun in the VR session, where volunteers used state-of-the-art VR to drive a Formula One car, and ride roller coasters. One brave student balanced on a VR plank above a huge drop, part of a programme designed to help people overcome a fear of heights. Many thanks to The Baker Dearing Trust for organising the day; it was a valuable insight into the future of digital health.

Baker Dearing Engineering CPD Day: Mika - Introduction to me and my Journey
Mika, a Studio School and Liverpool Life Sciences UTC alumni, led his first of two sessions of the day with his first being an introduction into himself as well as talking about his journey as a student at our schools. He spent time talking about multiple different projects he has taken part in, and even his work experience placements with Vinci Construction and The MTC. Leading further into his presentation he talked about his trip to San Diego for the Autodesk Conference as well as the steps he took to be able to present his EPQ project.
Mr Plevin Simulation within Fusion Mr Plevin had the larger of the three groups and was able to deliver training about using simulation tools in Fusion. He started by getting everybody to model a simple metal beam so that when it was time to use the simulation tools everyone would have the same platform to build from. From here he introduced everyone to the simulation environment and used stress testing as the area he would cover and demonstrated to the room how to add forces to one end of the beam which would give the simulation something to work with. After this he got everyone to simulate the same force on their beam meaning everybody's results were the same and that the results from the simulation can be explained easily.

Uniform and equipment reminder
I would like to remind parents of the uniform standards with regard to girl’s trousers. A small number of students are wearing fashion trousers – made of Lycra material and flared leggings in style. The expectation is for students to wear school trousers or a pleated skirt. As the weather is getting colder please ensure your child has a warm, waterproof coat. All students are required to have a school bag with them every day. This must be large enough to carry a number of A4 revision guides. We will provide your child with a suitable bag if they are unable to obtain one.
Jill Davies, Principal at Life Sciences and The Studio School.
