Bulgin visit
Our long-standing partner, Bulgin, recently visited. During the visit, they explained the "expanded beam" connector which our Year 13 students are prototyping. They also discussed engineering careers with Year 12 students and brought along a giant industrial scale drone which they have kindly loaned to us. The idea is that we allow our students to come up with different industrial applications of the technology.

Year 13 had a change of scenery and left the classroom to embrace the Arabic tent to help them plan an essay about cultural differences in the family. This allowed students to experience a taste of the cultural diversity that they have been researching and left them feeling calm and tranquil. Our students removed their shoes and enjoyed Arabic tea and cookies

Sickness procedure
From a safeguarding perspective, students who indicate they are feeling unwell will not be sent out of class as an unwell/injured student unaided may faint on the stairs or corridor. Staff will call first aid and first aid will go to the student. Students are not to contact home themselves when they are unwell, staff will call parents if needed.

Year 12 Health Care student Phoebe arranged her own work experience at a school.
Phoebe is the first Year 12 Health Care student to have started her placement, which has shown to be a good eye-opener to non-NHS careers that our Health Care pathway leads to.
“I have self-sourced my own placement for Health Care at a Special Educational Needs High School in Liverpool. I have picked to do my placement at this school as it links the future career I am hoping to achieve, being a SEN teacher. I am coming up to my fourth week of placement and have thoroughly enjoyed it and have already gained many skills within this time.”
Regarding her responsibilities, Phoebe noted “Whilst at placement I work as a team with the teacher and learning support staff in the class I am currently working in. In the class I am currently in the support me and the staff provide for the pupils range depending on their needs. This can involve personal care, learning support such as help with writing, reading and understanding the work given.” Phoebe also highlighted “I have also been expanding my skills by using and expanding my knowledge of a form of sign language called Makaton which is regularly used within the school to help communicate with a number of non-verbal pupil’s.”
When asked about her objectives for the placement, Phoebe shared “I plan to spend a set time within each class in the school to get to know the pupils, staff and to get an insight into what the job of a SEN teacher is like. I am also aiming to have a greater understanding of Special Needs, Disabilities, behaviours and I am hoping to gain as much experience as possible.” We are excited to see what the rest of your work experience has in store for you!

Uniform and equipment reminder
I would like to remind parents of the uniform standards with regard to girl’s trousers. A small number of students are wearing fashion trousers – made of Lycra material and flared leggings in style. The expectation is for students to wear school trousers or a pleated skirt. As the weather is getting colder please ensure your child has a warm, waterproof coat. All students are required to have a school bag with them every day. This must be large enough to carry a number of A4 revision guides. We will provide your child with a suitable bag if they are unable to obtain one.
Jill Davies, Principal at Life Sciences and The Studio School.
