Another exciting week, with plenty of opportunities for students to explore, create, and learn. Our Ignite STEAM group visited the stunning “Bees: A Story of Survival” exhibition, blending science and art in a truly immersive experience. We also welcomed Scott Doughty from 10:10 Games, who shared invaluable insights during National Careers Week. In Applied Science, Year 12 honed their microbiology skills, while Year 10 MeDeVet students took part in a hands-on heart dissection. Arabic Week brought a special musical performance from Hind & The Jaffa Cakes, inspiring us with their diverse melodies. With ongoing project-based learning and exciting STEAM experiments, there has already been plenty to celebrate this term!

Many parents will know from the local press and perhaps their children that there are concerns about unrest in one of our local communities. We have spoken to all students to reassure them as to how we, working with partner agencies, intend to keep all in our school community safe.

STEAM
Students in STEAM have been making dyes from natural sources (pictured, red cabbage) and experimenting with the effects of acids and alkalis on these dyes. Students will be making several different colour dyes and then experimenting with resist techniques to make patterns on cloth.

Applied Science
This week, Year 12 BTEC Applied Scientists have been learning good microbiological techniques by using the laminar flow hoods to load agar plates with lawns of E. coli bacteria and a range of potential antimicrobials. The students have demonstrated excellent technique and there are some promising young microbiologists.

1010 Games visit for National Careers Week
We had a visit from Scott Doughty, lead game designer from 10:10 Games based in Warrington. Scott gave an overview of his career to date, as well as lots of tips about what makes a great game designer. Some of the takeaways were work hard, get inspiration from everywhere and enjoy. Scott talked to our those entering the young BAFTA game designer competition as well as talking to the final year students about their ideas for their synoptic project. Overall, great feedback, and we are very grateful to Scott for giving up his time to our students. We look forward to seeing the end results of the work.

Arabic Week musical guest
As part of our Arabic Week celebrations, Life Sciences UTC & Studio Schools were thrilled to host a musical performance by Hind & The Jaffa Cakes, Hind & The Jaffa Cakes, an inspiring band from St. Augustine's Refugee Centre in Halifax. Originally formed by volunteers at the refugee centre, the band brings people together through music, transcending borders. Their vibrant performance featured Arabic, Farsi, and Spanish musical pieces, creating an atmosphere that inspired both staff and students. The tunes not only enriched our community but also encouraged imagination, unity, and a deeper understanding of diverse cultures. It was an unforgettable experience that truly highlighted the power of music.

Ignite Bee exhibition
Ignite STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics) group went to the fabulous “Bees: A Story of Survival” exhibition at the World Museum. The exhibition is an immersive experience which is both informative and affecting. The exhibits were rendered in light and sound, and the overall effect was captivating. Many students were inspired to photograph the work. The students were able to experience this STEAM production from the famous studio of Wolfgang Buttress, who has produced many famous installations such as “The Hive” in Kew Gardens.

|
The exhibition was inspiring both artistically and scientifically; we have made contact with one of the contributors, Dr David Roubik from the Smithsonian Museum, and we hope to be working with him on a project comparing the mouthparts of Panamanian vulture bees and local honeybees using the Hitachi Scanning Electron Microscope. This was a truly moving exhibition, and we had a very interesting time there. Many thanks to The World Museum for sponsoring the entrance fee for us. Sickness procedure
From a safeguarding perspective, students who indicate they are feeling unwell will not be sent out of class as an unwell/injured student unaided may faint on the stairs or corridor. Staff will call first aid and first aid will go to the student. Students are not to contact home themselves when they are unwell, staff will call parents if needed.

Heart dissection
Year 10 MeDeVet students participated in a heart dissection lesson with Miss Linkman. Shaza, an aspiring heart surgeon, expressed “Today, we had the incredible opportunity to dissect real hearts to test our capabilities and how we respond to blood. Before we started, Miss Linkman walked us through the main parts of the heart, explaining what we should be looking for things like the ventricles, veins, and fatty tissues."
"Then, we got hands-on with the dissection, and honestly, it was one of the best experiences I’ve ever had. Seeing all the different parts up close was absolutely fascinating. It really gave us a deeper understanding of how the heart works and what it’s like to handle real tissue. I just want to say a huge thank you to the school and to Miss Linkman for giving us this opportunity. It’s experiences like these that help us test our skills and prepare for the future.”

Uniform and equipment reminder
I would like to remind parents of the uniform standards with regard to girl’s trousers. A small number of students are wearing fashion trousers – made of Lycra material and flared leggings in style. The expectation is for students to wear school trousers or a pleated skirt. As the weather is getting colder please ensure your child has a warm, waterproof coat. All students are required to have a school bag with them every day. This must be large enough to carry a number of A4 revision guides. We will provide your child with a suitable bag if they are unable to obtain one.
Jill Davies, Principal at Life Sciences and The Studio School.
