Our students have had an incredible few weeks packed with hands-on experiences, inspiring visitors, and impressive project showcases! From exploring STEM careers at Hope University to presenting innovations during Science Week — including eco-stoves, life-saving tech, and a lamp powered by bioluminescent microbes — their ingenuity has truly shone. We welcomed John McLellan-Grant from SMMT, giving our A-level and T-level students a deep dive into the local automotive industry as part of their exciting data science projects. It’s been a brilliant reminder of how classroom learning connects to the real world — and how our students are already shaping the future.

Engineering workplace event at Hope University
Twelve Year 10 Engineering students attended the Experience of the Workplace event at Hope University, hosted by All About STEM. The day was packed with hands-on activities and insights into exciting STEM careers across the Liverpool City Region. Students explored problem-solving in international logistics with Liverpool City Region Freeport and The Chartered Institute of Export & International Trade, designed and marketed their own trainer, learnt about apprenticeships with the ASK Programme, and even managed a virtual zoo with Knowsley Safari Park.

The day wrapped up with an inspiring biotech workshop from CSL Seqirus, where students impressed experts by showcasing their engineering and scientific skills. It was an invaluable opportunity to connect classroom learning with real-world applications!

Student projects during Science Week
We held a showcase towards the end of last week with some of the amazing projects by students. Some of the ideas these young scientists, engineers, creatives and techs have been incredible, and we were blown away by the way they presented them. The project ideas included an eco-stove for sustainable, cleaner cooking in developing countries, a self-guided life-saving rope to help people in trouble in the water, amazing computer game concepts including superb artwork and backstories and a lamp powered by bioluminescent dinoflagellates!

Several groups have been working on a great project with The Institute for Research in Schools, Game Rangers International and David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation (DSWF) where they have analysed GPS tracking data on orphaned elephants raised, released and tracked in Kafue National Park in Zambia. They have used Google Earth Pro, excel and their artistic skills to visualise the movements of an orphaned elephant called Musolole. It was a perfect end to a wonderful week celebrating science and fills us with hope for the future to see passionate, enthusiastic and insightful young people presenting their ideas for using science and tech to solve problems.

Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) visit to the Engineering department
Last week, we were joined by John McLellan-Grant from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). John unpicked the local automotive manufacturing industry with our A-level Mathematicians and T-level Engineering students, unpacking lots of interesting data from the sector. This is part of our Ford Philanthropy and Global Giving data science projects, where our students are using Power BI to create data dashboards from real manufacturing data!

Sickness procedure
From a safeguarding perspective, students who indicate they are feeling unwell will not be sent out of class as an unwell/injured student unaided may faint on the stairs or corridor. Staff will call first aid and first aid will go to the student. Students are not to contact home themselves when they are unwell, staff will call parents if needed.

Uniform and equipment reminder
I would like to remind parents of the uniform standards with regard to girl’s trousers. A small number of students are wearing fashion trousers – made of Lycra material and flared leggings in style. The expectation is for students to wear school trousers or a pleated skirt.
All students are required to have a school bag with them every day. This must be large enough to carry a number of A4 revision guides. We will provide your child with a suitable bag if they are unable to obtain one.
