English trip to the Liverpool Playhouse Theatre
On the 20th of March, students visited the Playhouse for a performance of Pig Heart Boy by Malorie Blackman as part of a celebration of their hard work in English lessons. Students will soon begin studying another Blackman text. This has helped them gain valuable insight into some of the comparable themes the writer explores. The cohort were complimented for their impeccable behaviour as we departed.

Engineering insights: Guest speakers
Gwyn Jones, Head of Process Mechanical, recently visited us with one of their graduates, Steffy Joseph. Steffy delivered the first session of what is a real-life industrial project for the students to work on and present their ideas back to Process Mechanical in the summer.
This industrial project is set in the Nuclear sector and centres around the challenges of safety in the decommissioning of complex legacy process plants. Gwyn said, “I'm looking forward to seeing the final presentations and proposed solutions from the students.”
Gwyn even managed to whip up some potential applicants for PM Group's upcoming degree apprenticeships for this year! Big thanks to Steffy and Gwyn for delivering an invaluable session to our students.

The Studio School: Voting for dot-art school competition is now open
Daniella, Grace, and Ishani, our three talented Ignite students, have been shortlisted for the dot-art school competition, with the public vote now open. The entry with the most votes from each school wins a place in the exhibition. To vote, click here (Please note the top three student entries from each school are the only artworks available to vote for).
The dot-art schools competition showcases excellent visual art happening in schools across Liverpool City Region and develops young artists' creative confidence.

|
|
Alongside the exhibition launch in June, dot-art is holding two prize-giving ceremonies (primary and secondary) for the students, their families and teachers. At this event, their guest judge announces the overall winner and two runners-up for each age group. The winners and runners-up receive a selection of prizes kindly donated by dot-art supporters each year. Certificates are presented to shortlisted pupils from each participating school, usually by the Lord Mayor. The overall winning Year 9 student will have the opportunity to become part of dot-art’s Artist Membership scheme for 12 months and display their work alongside professional artists.
|
|
Dot-art encourages everyone to get involved and vote for an artwork online. Voting gives all the shortlisted pupils a chance to be the winner for their school and have their work shown in the iconic Walker Art Gallery.
|
|
The online public vote is open until Thursday, the 24th of April.
To vote, click here (Please note the top three student entries from each school are the only artworks available to vote for).
We would also like to say a huge well done to all of the other Ignite Studio School students who submitted their artwork;

English Masterclass
Dr Alex Broadhead, Senior Lecturer in English Language and Literature at The University of Liverpool, spoke to students about how the controversial romantic poet Percy Byysshe Shelley responded to the Peterloo Massacre and channelled his fury and sadness into a poem called ‘The Mask of Anarchy’. Although the poem was not published until after Shelley’s early death at the age of 29, it would go on to inspire protests for years to come.
|
|
|
The Masterclass was aimed at English Literature and History A-level students; however, anyone with an interest was able to attend. Alex also discussed the entry requirements for studying English at the University of Liverpool, followed by a Q&A session where our current students asked several questions. We would like to say a big thank you to Alex and Dr Mitchell for organising such an informative session for our pupils. If you would like to find out more about Dr Alex Broadhead, then click here.

Sickness procedure
From a safeguarding perspective, students who indicate they are feeling unwell will not be sent out of class as an unwell/injured student unaided may faint on the stairs or corridor. Staff will call first aid and first aid will go to the student. Students are not to contact home themselves when they are unwell, staff will call parents if needed.

Baltic Research Institute students attend Liverpool Lighthouse – see attached ‘BRI’
Recently our Baltic Research Institute (BRI) team to the ReCITE project creative health exchange event at Liverpool Lighthouse. Our year 12 students attended talks, panel discussions and workshops around the theme of creative ways to engage communities in health and wellbeing. We saw examples of using music, art, stories and poetry and met some inspiring people. These experiences will be incredibly valuable to our team as we plan further events and campaigns to raise awareness of Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) amongst young people.
A special thank you to Charlotte Hemingway and the ReCITE project for inviting Liverpool Life Sciences UTC BRI team to the event and inspiring and supporting our students. The students now have some interesting new ideas for taking their own health campaign forward.

Uniform and equipment reminder
I would like to remind parents of the uniform standards with regard to girl’s trousers. A small number of students are wearing fashion trousers – made of Lycra material and flared leggings in style. The expectation is for students to wear school trousers or a pleated skirt.
All students are required to have a school bag with them every day. This must be large enough to carry a number of A4 revision guides. We will provide your child with a suitable bag if they are unable to obtain one.
Jill Davies, Principal at Life Sciences and The Studio School.
