Ingrid, an Ignite Student who joined in September 2024

"I joined UTC this year after hearing about it from my sister, who also attends the school. I was really eager to join, so when the opportunity came, I took it.

At first, I was a little nervous, but having my best friend join with me made the transition much easier. Additionally, I quickly made new friends because everyone in my year group is really friendly, which made settling in a smooth experience."

Lessons & Subjects

"Lessons here are quite different from my previous school, but I enjoy them more. In my old school, there were subjects I didn’t particularly like, whereas here, I find them much more engaging—especially English and History, which I really enjoy.

My favourite subject so far is English because we get to read a variety of interesting books, including Shakespeare and The Evil Within. I like how we analyse quotes in depth, and the lessons are well-structured. The teachers are very knowledgeable and make the lessons enjoyable."

Future Goals

"Looking ahead, I plan to study Criminology and Sociology in sixth form, as I am very interested in pursuing a career as a detective. These subjects align with my ambitions, and I’m excited to explore them further."

Extracurricular Activities

"I have already had the opportunity to get involved outside of lessons by helping out at Open Evening. It was a great experience to guide prospective students around the school, showcasing the fantastic facilities and the wide range of subjects we offer. I appreciate that UTC provides so many unique extracurricular activities, many of which are not available in other schools."

Advice for New Students

"Making friends here is easy—just be friendly, and you’ll naturally get along with everyone. The lessons are enjoyable, and the teachers are highly skilled, ensuring that students get the most out of every subject."

Esther, a Year 10 student, who joined the UTC in September 2024

"I really like the school. It is quite different from my previous one in terms of the opportunities it offers. The teachers here are friendly and approachable, which I appreciate."

"The students here are focused and tend to keep to themselves, which I prefer as it creates a calm and conducive learning environment.

My favourite subject is science, particularly biology, as I aspire to become a cardiac surgeon in the future. I find the subject fascinating because it deepens my understanding of the human body, which is essential for my career goals.

The MeDeVet pathway has been incredibly beneficial in providing support and guidance for students interested in medical careers. Last week, we had a session in the health suite, where we explored real-world patient scenarios, which was a valuable learning experience. A couple of weeks ago, we were also trained in CPR, learning how to save lives, which I found extremely useful. These experiences have given me practical skills that are usually taught at university level.

I definitely plan to go to university to study medicine and pursue my goal of becoming a cardiac surgeon. However, my backup plan is to become a paramedic, ensuring that I can still work in the medical field and help people. My passion for medicine stems from my desire to assist others, support patients and their families, and make a meaningful difference in people’s lives."

Marcus, a Year 11 student, who joined the UTC in Year 10 in September 2023

"I joined the school in Year 10 after seeing advertisements highlighting its unique science-focused courses, including Psychology, which particularly interested me. Since most schools do not offer GCSE Psychology, I saw this as a great opportunity and chose it as one of my subjects. I started studying it in Year 10 and am now completing it in Year 11. It has been a fascinating subject, and I have really enjoyed the experience.

From the moment I joined, the school was very welcoming. The staff ensured that I settled in well and had support in making new friends. Their positivity and encouragement made a real difference.

For anyone considering joining in Year 10 and moving schools, I would say the transition is very straightforward. I was a bit anxious on my first day, but the staff made the experience so much easier. I would definitely recommend it to others!"
