On Saturday 25th January, Liverpool Life Sciences and The Studio welcomed Year 11 students from various schools across Liverpool for an exciting Sixth Form Pathway Taster Session.
This event provided students with a hands-on experience in Healthcare, Art, Life Sciences, and Social Sciences, offering them a glimpse into their potential future studies. Each session was designed to be engaging, informative, and interactive, ensuring that students left with valuable insights and newly acquired skills. The morning started with an introduction to the Sixth Form by Principal Jill Davies.
Life Sciences: An Introduction to Laboratory Techniques
Dr Michaela Mitchell led an engaging Life Sciences session where students gained hands-on experience with essential laboratory techniques.
Students explored micro-pipetting, an essential skill for precise liquid handling in scientific research, and delved into microscopy, observing specimens up close to understand their structures at a microscopic level. This session allowed students to develop key lab skills that will be invaluable in their future studies and careers in science.
" Staff are really welcoming and encourage curiosity and questions."
Social Sciences: Understanding Criminal Psychology and Forensic Science
Sarah Grahame captivated students with a thought-provoking session on criminology and forensic psychology, titled "What Makes a Murderer?". This session delved into the psychological aspects behind criminal behaviour and introduced students to forensic techniques, including footprint analysis.
Additionally, Liz Voges led an insightful Philosophy and Ethics discussion, encouraging students to critically examine moral dilemmas and ethical considerations.
These sessions provided a comprehensive introduction to the social sciences, inspiring students to think deeply and analytically.
"I really understood the session and it made me definitely want to come to this Sixth Form as it seems like a really good school and has nice teachers I think I'd get along with."
Art: Exploring Stop Motion Animation Techniques
In the Art session, students had the opportunity to explore the world of stop-motion animation using moulding clay. They learnt about the techniques used in the animation industry, drawing inspiration from famous stop-motion films.
The session allowed them to unleash their creativity while experimenting with industry-standard methods. In addition to the hands-on animation work, students explored the impressive art studio, providing them with a taste of the creative environment they could be part of in Sixth Form.
"The school and the teachers are amazing. The school has exceeded all my expectations."
Healthcare: Introduction to SIM Man and homeostasis
Students interested in Healthcare were welcomed into the state-of-the-art health suite, where they met SIM Man, a highly advanced robotic patient used in medical training. This sophisticated technology, unique to the UTC, gave students a fascinating insight into real-world medical training.
Students also explored key biological concepts such as the endocrine system and homeostasis, understanding how the body maintains balance and responds to internal and external changes. This session provided a comprehensive introduction to healthcare and medical sciences, sparking enthusiasm amongst future healthcare professionals.
"I really liked how there was a lot of medical equipment, I would definitely recommend."
Alongside their chosen sessions, students were given a tour of the building, allowing them to familiarise themselves with the excellent facilities available at Liverpool Life Sciences and The Studio. The feedback from students was overwhelmingly positive, with many expressing excitement about the engaging, hands-on experiences and the welcoming atmosphere of the school.
We are thrilled to have hosted a successful event and look forward to welcoming many of these students as part of our Sixth Form cohort in September. The future looks bright for these young minds, and we are excited to see them thrive in their chosen pathways.
