Pathway Taster Session: Round-up

We were delighted to welcome students from schools across Merseyside to our recent Pathway Taster Day, designed for those interested in exploring our unique Sixth Form Pathways. The day offered a hands-on introduction to some of our most exciting specialisms, including MeDeVet (Medicine, Dentistry, and Veterinary Science) and Engineering.

Each session was tailored to provide an engaging and practical insight into these fields, and students thoroughly enjoyed immersing themselves in their chosen pathways.

Keep reading for a brief overview of the activities from each session…

MeDeVet Pathway Session

The MeDeVet taster session included content that was relevant to A-Level Biology and A-Level Chemistry specifications. More specifically, the session focused on protein misfolding and its role in causing diseases such as Mad Cow Disease (BSE) and Kuru. Students were engaged and enthusiastic as they explored the mechanisms and biochemistry of the diseases.

Through interactive discussions and hands on activities, they gained a deeper understanding of how chemical processes influence biological systems. It was inspiring to witness their curiosity and passion for learning.

Engineering Pathway Session

During the recent Pathway Taster Day, students exploring the Engineering Pathway engaged in an industry-focused challenge to design a GoPro housing for the high-performance BAC Mono car. The task required meeting a detailed design specification to ensure the housing was secure, aerodynamic, and suitable for track-day filming.

Students began by researching and developing their concepts, applying creativity and technical skills to produce innovative designs. Using rapid modeling techniques, they transformed their ideas into prototypes, gaining hands-on experience in engineering processes.

This activity provided valuable insight into real-world engineering, highlighting the importance of precision, problem-solving, and innovation in the field.

Students who attended our session said:

“The school was amazing, I loved it! It was very welcoming.”

“I really enjoyed my experience here and found everything I learned very interesting.”

“I thought that the MeDeVet Pathway taster session provided me with an idea of what A-Level Biology is like and also what interviews for Medical, Dental and Veterinary school will be like.”

We enjoyed welcoming students from schools all across Merseyside to attend the Pathway Taster Session and we are looking forward to the next ones.
