Tommy's story: aspiring neurosurgeon

“The complexity of the medicine application process was overwhelming, but our teachers ensured we were well supported throughout. Early integration of UCAT exam preparation into our timetable was crucial; it allowed us to tackle its challenges without last minute stress,” says alumnus Tommy of his time with us at Life Sciences UTC. “The assistance we received for our UCAS personal statements was exceptional. Our teachers paid meticulous attention to detail, sharing top tips to craft compelling applications. For me, the standout was the interview preparation. The programme they offered was incredibly thorough and of the highest quality. It included scheduled sessions, intervention classes, and tailored mock interviews, which gave us a significant advantage.

“Additionally, the unique opportunities to learn from various doctors and pharmacists who shared their stories and advice were invaluable. This insight not only eased the pressure of the application process but also helped me balance it with my A-level studies.”

Tommy achieved an A in Biology and Maths, and a B in Chemistry, as well as an incredible UCAT score of over 2800 – that’s the top 5% in the country! His natural interest and curiosity in science, coupled with his immense dedication and hard-working nature, has been reflected in his accomplishments this year. A badminton player, a science-enthusiast and an all-round lovely gentlemen that gets on with everybody; it’s clear that Tommy’s not only reaching for the stars, but soaring up there with them.

Tommy’s now decided to take a gap year, and is excited for the future – he’s grateful to the UTC for the support he’s had as a student.

Leonie Darby, MeDeVet Programme lead, said, “watching Tommy excel in the sciences, UCAT and interview preparation has been truly inspiring. His curiosity, and exceptional understanding of complex concepts in A Level and dedication to becoming a doctor has set him apart. I have no doubt they will make an outstanding medical student following a gap year and a compassionate, skilled doctor in the future. Their potential is boundless, and I couldn’t be prouder of his achievements.”

Tommy, like all of our incredible students, is a credit to UTC, and we’re so very proud of everything they have all achieved. We wish them every luck in their future endeavours, not that they’ll need them. With minds and hearts as large as theirs, they already have all that they need to thrive.
